Welcome to the Food Composition Database for Epidemiological Studies in Italy (Banca Dati di Composizione degli Alimenti per Studi Epidemiologici in Italia – BDA). On this website you will find:

  • the list of food that can be consulted on-line (n =1109);
  • energy (kcal and kJ) calculated including fibre;
  • the composition of foods not only per 100 g or 100 mL, but also per portion;
  • a flexible system to search data by food name, by food code, by food component, by food category;
  • the documentation concerning the food components;
  • an extensive list of references.

Shows updated food composition data published in 2022. The updated food groups are: cereals, flours, pasta, bread, crackers, rusks; sweets, sugar, jams, ice creams; brioches, cookies, puddings, cakes. The following food components have been added, compared to the initial version: amino acids, some fatty acids (especially omega-3), simple sugars, minerals and trace elements (magnesium, copper, selenium, chlorine, iodine, manganese, sulfur), vitamins (pantothenic acid, biotin, vitamin B12, Vitamin K).
Shows updated food composition data published in 2015. The updated food groups are: fresh fruit and berries, cooked or canned fruit, dried fruit and seeds, fruit flours and fruit juices and drinks. Within these food categories, the following food components have been added, compared to the initial version: amino acids, some fatty acids (especially omega-3), simple sugars, minerals and trace elements (magnesium, copper, selenium, chlorine, iodine, manganese, sulfur), vitamins (pantothenic acid, biotin, vitamin B12, Vitamin K). Gorgonzola with walnuts was added to cheese category.
Shows updated food composition data published in 2008. The updated food groups are: milk and milk products; meat and fish (fresh and processed); alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages; eggs; fats and oils. Within these food categories, the following food components have been added, compared to the initial version: amino acids, some fatty acids (especially omega-3), simple sugars, minerals and trace elements (magnesium, copper, selenium, chlorine, iodine, manganese, sulfur), vitamins (pantothenic acid, biotin, vitamin B12).
Shows food composition data from the initial  version (1998) and currently under update (vegetables and legumes).

The BDA working group is a member of the international non-profit association EuroFIR AISBL (Association Internationale Sans But Lucratif), that originates from the European project EuroFIR (European Food Information Resource), a network of excellence focusing on food information resources.

To receive our database in electronic format (excel file) a contribution has to be paid. The contribution is paid as a “donation” and the funding will be used for research activities connected to the BDA project. The amount of the contribution depends on the final use and any commercial purposes. Consult the section “Contributions for the use” to find out how to request data.
